WESSEL, Garlyn. (Colesburg, IA, Mar. 20, 1927--Dubuque, IA, July 11, 1982). Wessel came to Dubuque in 1965 as the first person to hold the office of assistant superintendent of the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT. He had received his B.A. degree from the State College of Iowa, M.A. degree in 1956 from the University of Iowa, and his Ph.D in 1965 from the University of Iowa. He taught and coached and later served as principal in Guttenberg, Iowa. Wessel served as the superintendent of the Olds Consolidated School District in Henry County and the superintendent of the West Lyon Community School District in northwest Iowa.

He was appointed superintendent in 1966, replacing Max CLARK who served in the position for twenty years. (1) Clark was shifted to the new position of administrative consultant when his contract expired in June.

During Wessel's tenure, the district enrollment grew from an estimated eight thousand students to just over thirteen thousand. Construction in the District included the building of STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL, HOOVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, EISENHOWER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, and AUDUBON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

Wessel was succeeded by Dr. Howard PIGG.
