WALLER, Jim

WALLER, Jim. (Dubuque, IA, Feb. 17, 1934--Dubuque, IA, June 30, 2015). The son of Walter J. (Pat) Waller and Daisy (Shaw) Waller, Jim graduated from LORAS ACADEMY in 1952. Jim married Kathleen "Kay" Dougherty on October 26th, 1957. Kay proceeded Jim in death on October 3rd 2003.

Jim served in the army, based in Germany from 1955-1957. He was employed at the JOHN DEERE DUBUQUE WORKS from 1955 to 1993. He served as financial secretary treasurer for Local 94 UAW from 1969 to 1993. Upon his retirement, Waller ran for a position on the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors in 1992, seeking the seat held by Eldon HERRIG. Although he failed to receive 35% of the votes in the primary, Waller secured the nomination in the special Democratic convention and went on to win the election in November. He took his seat on January 1, 1993 and served until 2005. (1)

Jim was involved in many community organizations. He was on the executive board at the United Way for 30 years and served as chairman in 1997. (2) He was in charge of organizing and running the Labor Day Parade for 23 years and was considered responsible for making it the city's largest annual parade. (3) He served as board member of the American Red Cross and the Dubuque County Hospital Board of Trustees.
