WALKER'S SHOE STORE. In the 1850s photos show a three-story Italianate building with arch windows and a bracketed cornice. The building was originally purchased by Dr. John FINLEY in 1865 for $5,750. He maintained his practice in the building until 1858.

In 1873 TORBERT DRUG COMPANY moved into the building and operated their retail store until 1915.

Finley Hospital, which obtained the property from Mrs. Finley, sold the property in 1915 to William LAWTHER, Sr. Local architect Thomas CARKEEK was hired to remodel the facade into SULLIVANESQUE ARCHITECTURE using sculptural and ornamental glazed white terra cotta.

In 1916 Banner Dairy Lunch (later known as Banner Lunch Company) opened on the first floor and Cafe Moderne went into business on the second.

The property was sold to Joseph J. NAGLE in 1927. HARTIG DRUG COMPANY operated on the first floor until 1941. Several businesses including LINK-ART-STUDIO used the second floor.

The Nagle estate sold the property to ADAMS REALTY CORPORATION in 1944. They rented the space to Walker's Shoe Store, a family-owned business that operated nine shoe stores in seven Iowa cities. In 1946 renovation included red pink granite panels being used to create a modern smooth exterior. Large display windows on the first level of the deep storefront increased exterior visibility. A terrazzo floor led through the storefront to the glass doors.

The 1939 and 1945 Dubuque City Directory listed 661 Main.

The 1948 Dubuque Classified Business Directory through 1993 Dubuque City Directory listed 756 Main.

In March 2010 Pegacus Properties purchased the building. Historic preservation and renovation on all three floors created four upscale apartments on the second and third levels. Victory Cafe operated on the first level. The building was nominated for the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES in September, 2010.
