Zachary Taylor, later President of the United States, once was responsible for keeping miners east of the Mississippi River.

TAYLOR, Zachary. (Monebello, Orange County, VA, Nov. 24, 1784-July 9, 1850). Twelfth president of the United States. Taylor was one of many military commanders to remove miners from lands west of the MISSISSIPPI RIVER. The territory was legally reserved for Native Americans prior to the signing of the Black Hawk Treaty on June I, 1833.

As the commander of Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien, Taylor warned white miners at Dubuque on July 4, 1830, to leave the area within one week. Most miners, respecting Taylor's reputation as a soldier, quickly returned eastward across the river. When Taylor arrived several days later only three stubborn miners were arrested.
