TALLMAN, Peleg. (Bath, ME, Apr. 18, 1836--Columbus, Kentucky, Apr. 15, 1863) In 1858 Tallman was working in Dubuque as a realtor and money broker with an office on 7th Street between Main and Iowa. The Daily Times noted that he had been a very extensive dealer in lands during the good times of 1855-1856.
After the economic crisis of 1857, he managed the SHOT TOWER and for a year was the Assistant Superintendent of the DUBUQUE CUSTOM HOUSE AND POST OFFICE construction. The Dubuque City Directory of 1859 listed Tallman as the Shot Tower agent.
In 1862 Tallman became a war correspondent for the New York Times. He died in that capacity during the CIVIL WAR.
