SWEET, Harold. (Storm Lake, IA--Minneapolis, MN, Sept. 16, 2000 ). Sweet graduated from Buena Vista College in 1935 and from 1936 through 1948 taught high school and coached in Early, Anamosa, Sioux Rapids, Manson and Carroll, Iowa. He and his wife moved to Dubuque in 1948 where he was a teacher and coached football, basketball, and track. He served as the athletic director for the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICTfrom 1955 to 1982 when he retired. , Capping a distinguished thirty-four-year career in sports and educational administration, Sweet was elected to the Iowa High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1971. He was named the Iowa Athletic Director of the year and national runner-up in 1976. Sweet was the recipient of the distinguished service award of the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations in 1979. He was a charter member and past president of the Board of Vontrol of the Iowa Athletic Director' Association. (1)

Sweet was instrumental in starting Dubuque's intra-city sports competition in 1964 and beginning the Washington Junior High Relays. During his career, he guided the improvement of Dalzell Field with its track increased from one-fifth to one-quarter mile. A new gymnasium was built in 1954 with a new football field, all-weather track, and softball fields in following years. Sweet retired in 1982. (2)
