STORYBOOK HILL ZOO. Children's park on North Cascade Road. Built by the Dubuque Optimists Club in a section of FDR Park, in 1975, Storybook Hill Zoo opened in 1976. The zoo is a replica of an American farm from the 1940s, and contains a wide variety of animals that a person visiting this time period might see on an actual farm. Children are invited to feed the animals and ride the Storybook Express that provides rides for children around the park. (1)

In 1987 the City discontinued maintenance at the zoo, but under civic pressure continued providing lawn mowing equipment and liability insurance. In 1988 the city council rejected an Optimist request for $4,000 in funding, but did agree to an extension of the assistance provided since 1987.
