SOMMERFELD, P. H. E. (Prussia, July 12, 1835--Unknown). Sommerfeld came to the Ottawa, Canada in 1859. He remained there one and one-half years before moving to Chicago. There he learned to dye cloth.

Sommerfeld moved to Des Moines, Iowa and worked in a woolen mill for a year. He then moved to Dubuque. In 1863 he established the DUBUQUE STEAM DYE WORKS. That business expanded into others dealing with cleaning clothing.

Sommerfeld was a member of the German Sangerbund. He was also an active member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen. In 1894 he served as the Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Iowa.
