Schroeder and his parents came from Mobile, Alabama to Dubuque by steamboat on May 17, 1855. He earned his first money carrying newspapers. In addition to being one of the founders of the Key City Insurance Company, Schroeder assisted in establishing the [[DUBUQUE ALTAR MANUFACTURING COMPANY]] and served on the board of directors of both companies. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago in 1880 prior to being elected county treasurer in 1895. He was re-elected without opposition in 1897 and served until 1901.
