(Diekirch, Luxemburg, July 16, 1849--Dubuque, IA, Apr. 21, 1926).  Schroeder and his parents came from Mobile, Alabama to Dubuque by steamboat on May 17, 1855. He earned his first money carrying newspapers. After graduating from [[BAYLESS BUSINESS COLLEGE]], his business career was started on January 19, 1865 as a porter in the wholesale grocery business owned by [[RUMPF, W. H.|W. H. RUMPF]]. (1) He rose in the business to became a shipping clerk and later house salesman.

He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago in 1880 prior to being elected county treasurer in 1895. He was re-elected without opposition in 1897 and served until 1901. (2) Schroeder was a member of the [[DUBUQUE TRAVELING AND BUSINESS MEN'S ASSOCIATION]], [[DUBUQUE LUXEMBURG SOCIETY]], Dubuque Germania Society and served at least two terms on the public school board. He was the treasurer of the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Association for many years. (3)
