SCHOOLCRAFT, Henry Rowe. (Albany County NY, Mar. 28, 1793-Washington, D.C. Dec. 10,1864) Scientist and explorer. One of the greatest authorities on Native Americans in his day, Schoolcraft published his View of the Lead Mines of Missouri in 1819. Schoolcraft's book led to his appointment as the topographer on expeditions with Governor Lewis CASS on the Upper MISSISSIPPI RIVER.
During a stop in Prairie du Chien, Schoolcraft took a side trip to the mines of Julien DUBUQUE. Notes of his visit were rewritten in chapter twelve of his Narrative Journal of Travels ... in the Year 1820. He noted that most of the MINING among the Native Americans was done by the women. The village on Catfish Creek had an estimated population of two hundred fifty living in nineteen lodges in two rows.
