SCHARPHOFF, Aloysius H. (Dyersville, IA--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 6, 1970) Scharphoff joined the Telegraph Herald as an apprentice printer on February 22, 1920 and rose in the company to be the composing room foreman for twenty-eight years. He was also was the editor and publisher of the DUBUQUE SPORTING NEWS for nineteen years.
Scharphoff was a past president of the International Typographical Local 22 and served on several union committees. Known as having one of the finest stamp collections in the city, he was a past president of the Dubuque Stamp and Coin Club and a volunteer instructor for stamp and coin collectors at the DUBUQUE BOYS' CLUB. He was a volunteer at the Club for fourteen years and also a member of its board of directors.
