SADLER, WAGNER & CO.

SADLER, WAGNER & CO. The company was started in 1857 by C. J. Sadler with $400.00 on the corner of the alley below Main on 6th. Twice within the year the growth of the business required larger buildings. In 1858 the business was located on the southwest corner of Main and 6th with a store second from the corner also rented. A second story was constructed on the principal place of business the following year.

In 1860 Sadler and Wagner formed a partnership and the company was moved to Main Street. They were joined by a Mr. Hamlin in 1863.

Fire destroyed furniture factory in 1870. Aided by financing from two local businessmen, the factory was reconstructed of brick. Mr. Sadler ended his interest in crockery in 1873 and decided to concentrate on furniture manufacturing. (1)

In 1877 the company and all its supplies were purchased by the DUBUQUE FURNITURE AND BURIAL CASE COMPANY. (2)

The 1874-1875 and 1875-1876 Dubuque City Directory stated that this business was located at 576 to 584 Main.
