Arriving in Dubuque in 1959, Sally enjoyed a active life driving with friends to Chicago to have their hair cut at Vidal Sassoon before searching through the city for food delights she could not find at home. She sang in her church choir, performed various roles in community theater, and was a member of a national guild dedicated to the creation of hooked rugs. | ||
Sally advocated for children in foster care and successfully sued the local school district for equal access for children of all learning abilities. She volunteered to drive artists-in-residence around the community and for Meals-on-Wheels and aided the [[CARNEGIE-STOUT PUBLIC LIBRARY]], Audubon Society, Dubuque Fine Arts Council (Person of the Year in 1994), Friendship Force, [[HOSPICE OF DUBUQUE]], and the Dubuque Symphony League among others. For ten years, she was the director of the Fine Arts One Act Play Competition. In the 1990s she her husband Jim received volunteer awards from the State of Iowa. A great environmentalist, she believed strongly in recycling and organized neighborhood programs. | |||
