RYAN, Cornelius. (Frankfort, KY, May 22, 1857--Dubuque, IA, Jan. 27, 1934). As a child, Ryan moved with his parents to Dubuque and after receiving his education entered the construction business.

Ryan was involved in the excavation that began work on the BANK AND INSURANCE BUILDING by keeping twenty teams of workers constantly on hand. He had previously been instrumental in the building of Grandview Avenue and later Southern Avenue, filling of Salina Street and the old half-mile race track and had a significant role in work at Woodlawn Park subdivision. He was hired for the excavation for the Shields building on the corner of Main and Jones STREETS and frequently sent teams of workers to Chicago. (1)
