RUSK, Tom. (Dubuque, IA-- ). A former football star at the HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL, Rusk earned all-state honors at fullback after leading the team to their first winning season (6-3) and a share of the Mississippi Valley Conference championship in his senior year of 1974. In 2007 he still held the single-season school record for carries (2110) and ranked in the top five in rushing yards in a season (1,167). He also won a state wrestling title in 1975 and starred at linebacker at the University of Iowa. He was selected in the NFL Draft and played briefly in the Canadian Football League.

In 1983 Rusk won the Dubuque Toughman Contest with a string of first round knockouts. He lost a very unpopular decision in the finals at the nationals.

In 2007 Rusk's name joined those of Jay BERWANGER, Lester J. "Dick" HOERNER, C. Michael "Mike" REILLY, Ted BURGMEIER and Tom Holt in the Iowa High School Athletic Association Players' Hall of Fame.
