NORMAN, Wayne Albert. (Winthrop, IA, Jan. 29, 1887--Dubuque, IA, Oct. 5, 1938). Vice-president and general manager of [[CARR, RYDER, AND ADAMS]]. Norman, an executive at Carr, Ryder, & Adams Company at the time of his death, was a founder of the Dubuque Thrift Plan which was established in the depths of the Great Depression to make funds available to local businesses. He served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, [[YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION (Y.M.C.A.)]],[[DUBUQUE BUILDING AND LOAN ASSOCIATION]] (later [[HARVEST SAVINGS BANK]]), and the Manufacturers and Wholesalers Bureau.

Norman came alone to Dubuque at the age of seven to live with the family of Rev. G. M. Orvis, pastor of [[SUMMIT CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST]]. He attended Grinnell College and taught school in South Dakota before returning to Dubuque to work for [[ADAMS, John Taylor|John Taylor ADAMS]] who met him at the train upon his arrival. In 1910 he joined the firm of Carr, Ryder and Adams in the cost and purchasing department. He left the company in 1912 for two years, but returned and was elected secretary in 1919. In 1932 he was elected vice-president and general manager.
