James Nora

NORA, James. (Iron Mountain, MI,-Dubuque, IA, June 11, 1993). Nora began his teaching career in Dubuque in 1923. A longtime respected staff member at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, began the school's physical education program. (1) During his career he was also an assistant coach in basketball, football, and track. He also served as a baseball umpire and refereed football for sixty years. In 1938 Nora was in charge of Dubuque County's military enlistment program. (2) In the early 1940s, boys in his gym classes ran obstacle courses and practiced marching in preparation for military service. He coached the 1954 Senior High baseball team to the state championship. (3) Among the athletes Nora coached were Jay BERWANGER and Joseph HOERNER. (4)

Nora left high school teaching in 1966 and devoted two years to developing physical education courses at the elementary level in Dubuque. He retired in 1968. (5)

Nora received many honors. Inducted into the Physical Education and Iowa Coaches halls of fame, Nora was also remembered in 1988 when the new gymnasium at Senior High School was named in his honor. (6) In 1990 Nora, chairman of the Dubuque Elks's Youth Committee, was named "Elk of the Year." Under his guidance, the Dubuque Lodge was the first in the nation to conduct a Hoop Shoot for handicapped children." He also helped many students enter the Elks National Scholastic Achievement Contest. (7) In 1992 Nora was a member of the inaugural class of the Senior Hall of Fame.
