MICHOPOULOS, Lois. (Dubuque, IA- ). Founder, Thalassemia Foundation for the Children of Greece, named for a type of anemia with high incidence in the Mediterranean area. Michopoulos, the former Lois Kloston of Dubuque, and her husband established the foundation in honor of their son who was diagnosed with the disease.

The foundation raised money to provide lifesaving transfusions for the poor children of Greece, financed construction of more transfusion centers, encouraged research into the disease, and educated parents of these children so that the disease was not a stigma on the family and they realized their children did not have to die.
