MERCHANTS' EXCURSION. On August 3, 1864 it was announced that a "merchant's excursion" was being planned. The event was to cultivate business along the route of the DUBUQUE AND SIOUX CITY RAILROAD.

To achieve the goal, two passenger cars and an engine were chartered. Beginning in the morning, the train stopped at all stations to visit the local merchants. Dinner was planned for Manchester with an overnight stop in Independence. The next day the train continued to Cedar Falls. Dinner was planned in Waterloo with a return to Dubuque that night. The wives of the businessmen were welcomed to participate.
