MCNAMARA, Francis Patrick

MCNAMARA, Francis Patrick. (Fitchburg, MA, Dec. 22, 1883- Dubuque, IA, July 2, 1944). Physician. McNamara came to Dubuque in 1921 to serve as pathologist for FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE). He was the president of the medical staff at Finley in 1923 and 1924. He founded the Clinicopathological Conference at Finley and each month contributed an article to the Iowa State Medical Journal. In 1938 McNamara joined the staff of MERCY HOSPITAL. He published nearly one hundred articles on medical topics and with two other Iowa doctors, he wrote the Cancer Manual of the Iowa State Medical Society.

For his exhibit of pathologic specimens, McNamara was awarded the 1933 silver medal, class 2, by the Committee of Awards Scientific Exhibit of the American Medical Association. He was president of the Dubuque County Medical Society from 1931 to 1935. In 1939 he served as president of the Interprofessional Society. From 1934-1936 McNamara was the Iowa representative to the American Society for the Control of Cancer.

In 1928 Dr. McNamara became a deputy councillor of the Iowa State Medical Society. He held that position until 1936 when he was chosen councillor. He held that job for three years while also being the chairman of the executive and cancer committees of the society. He was elected president of the Iowa State Medical Society in 1940.
