McCaw, Fred Hall. (Washington, D.C., Nov. 5, 1945--South Dakota, Aug. 2, 2006). McCaw graduated from DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and studied at the University of Iowa for four years before serving with the Navy during the VIETNAM WAR.

He worked as a systems analyst for several years for the Washington Mutual Savings Bank, Seattle, Washington.

McCaw graduated from the University of Iowa Law School and was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1973. He worked for the Dubuque Area Legal Services from 1973 to 1976. An assistant county attorney from 1976 to 1982, he campaigned for the position of county attorney in 1982. He failed to get 35% of the primary vote, and a special Democratic convention selected James HERRIG as the party nominee.

McCaw campaigned successfully against Herrig in 1986 and took over the office on January 1, 1987. He was a member of the Prosecuting Attorneys' Training Council from 1992 to 1995, past president of the Iowa County Attorney's Association and a member of the Iowa County Bar Association. He participated in several Habitat For Humanity mission trips and was a member of the Millard Fillmore Camping Society.

The Dubuque County Board of Supervisors named the law library in the courthouse in his honor.
