MARIHART, Earl In 1970 Earl Marihart retired from the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT after serving as the director of Adult Education since 1950. During his tenure, Marihart supervised the formation of a high school completion program allowing adults who had never finished high school to receive an equivalent diploma. With the cooperation of the local hospitals, the Dubuque School of Practical Nursing was established. He also helped establish apprenticeship and trades training programs and expanded drivers' education courses to include "defensive driving" techniques and a driver education program in cooperation with the Dubuque Municipal Court.
Marihart received his bachelor's degree from the UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE and master's from Iowa State Teachers' College (later University of Northern Iowa) with a thesis on the history of adult education in Dubuque. In 1926 he began his career in education as a teacher and basketball coach at Nodaway, Iowa. His experience in adult education began in the early 1930s working with training programs for the Virginia Railway Company in West Virginia.
In addition to his work in adult education, Marihart served locally as a playground director for the Dubuque Recreation Department; agent-at-large for 4-H Clubs; president of the Iowa Industrial Education Association and the Dubuque Kiwanis Club; and treasurer of the Dubuque Safety Council.
In recognition of his work in adult education, he received the Laureate Citation, an award presented nationally only once or twice, from Epsilon Pi Tau, professional honorary fraternity in industrial arts and industrial vocational education.
