MADDOX, Claude. (Chicago, IL- ). In 1977 Maddox, at age twenty-three, became head football coach at LORAS COLLEGE. He was the youngest head football coach in Iowa colleges and the first African American head football coach in the state of Iowa.

Maddox came to Loras in 1971 as a student. As a member of the college's football team, he was a four-year starter, twice All-American and team captain. His abilities qualified him for a tryout with the National Football League. Considering a career with the Broncos or Dallas Cowboys during his senior year, Maddox instead chose to accept the coaching position at his alma mater.
