M. M. JOHANNSEN CANDY COMPANY. Established around 1908, the company made a specialty of high grade chocolates and all sorts of "satin finish" hard candies. The "Elk Sealed Ribbon" chocolates manufactured by the company was perhaps its best known product. Due to the popularity of its candy, the firm had to increase its building room 100% each of the first two years it was in business. Five salesmen represented the company in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and the Dakotas. (1)

The 1899-1900 Dubuque City Directory listed 155 8th.

The 1910 "Dubuque City Directory" listed 260 Main.

The brothers had for twenty years worked independently until around 1907 when they joined together to operate from a building on Main Street between 3rd and 4th STREETS. They remained there only one year before outgrowing the space and moved to a building on the southwest corner of Iowa and 2nd Street. (2)

In 1915 the announcement was made that the company, despite offers to move to Chicago, was planning to renovate the Glover building at 6th and Locust. Expansion of the company was expected. (3)
