M. M. JOHANNSEN CANDY COMPANY. Located at 260 Main Street, the company was established around 1907 and occupied only two floors of the building. Within six months, demand for its high grade candies required another floor for production. Within a year, the firm had doubled its quarters and in the following year and a half three floors of the adjoining building had been occupied.

The Johannsen company manufactured high grade chocolates of all kinds and "satin finish" hard candies like ribbon candy. The "satin finish" candies had a high gloss that separated them from the more common varieties.

The "Elk Sealed Ribbon" chocolates were thought to be the best known product of the factory.

Five salesmen on the road resulted in the Johannsen candy being well known in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and the Dakotas.

The 1923 Dubuque City Directory listed 255-99 W. 6th.

The 1929 Dubuque City Directory listed the corner of W. 6th and Locust.
