LARGE AND AMSDEN. Located at 205 Main according to the 1886-87 Dubuque City Directory, the business was one of the oldest and largest wholesale boot and shoe houses west of the MISSISSIPPI RIVER.
The company was established in 1856 by William P. LARGE who formed a co-partnership with Monroe AMSDEN in 1879. Upon the death of W.P. Large, the presidency of the company passed to Walter Large who remained in New York as a prominent attorney. M.R. Amsden, the general manager and treasurer, was the sole manager of the company.
The 1899-1900 Dubuque City Directory located this business at 205-215 Main.
