The company was established in 1856 by [[LARGE, William P.|William P. LARGE]] who formed a co-partnership with [[AMSDEN, Monroe|Monroe AMSDEN]] in 1879. Upon the death of W.P. Large, the presidency of the company passed to Walter Large who remained in New York as a prominent attorney. M.R. Amsden, the general manager and treasurer, was the sole manager of the company.


The 1899-1900 ''Dubuque City Directory'' located this business at 205-215 Main.
