In 2008 Jochum served on the Environmental Protection committee, Labor committee, Ways and Means committee and the State Government Committee where she was chair. Jochum was named the Legislator of the Year from the Mental Health Association in 1994. In 1995, she received the Jamie Barwick Award for Excellence for outstanding contributions to the lives of children with disabilities. Jochum received the 1996 Leadership Award from the Public Policy Institute for outstanding efforts as chairwoman of the Dubuque County Democratic Party.
In 2008 Jochum was elected to the Iowa Senate. In 2012 less than two weeks after winning a second term in the Iowa Senate, Jochum was elected to the Senate presidency. The first woman to be Iowa Senate president was Republican Mary E. Kramer, of Des Moines. She held the post from 1997 until 2004, when she became U.S. ambassador to Barbados and Eastern Caribbean. Another Dubuquer who served as Iowa Senate president was Joseph J. WELSH in the early 1990s. Jochum told the Telegraph Herald that she decided to seek the presidency after receiving encouragement from several colleagues. She started asking senators for their support Nov. 7, the day after Democrats retained majority control in the Senate, 26-23. (1)
Among her many duties will be to preside over the chamber's proceedings -- a controversial responsibility on occasion -- and to make committee assignments. In the unusual event that neither the governor nor lieutenant governor could serve as the state's chief executive, Jochum, as Senate president, would serve as governor on an interim basis. (2)
