JESSE P. FARLEY (ORIGINAL HOME)-636 W. 11TH
JESSE P. FARLEY HOME-original. Although it is one of the oldest buildings standing in Dubuque, the exact date this home at 636 West 11th was constructed is not known. The back portion of the home was probably constructed following permanent white settlement in Dubuque and was built for the family of Jesse P. Farley. The front half of the house was finished in 1866.
The house is constructed of brick although it has since been covered with stucco and then siding. The house now fronts on West 11th Street, but the interior's main floor suggests that it once fronted in the opposite direction. When it was constructed, it was the only house on the hill between West 14th Street and Julien Avenue and west probably as far as the West Dubuque mines. The property surrounding the house made up the Farley farm and on it were the mines Farley worked during his earliest days in Dubuque.
