JENKINS, Derek. (Germany-- ). Born in Germany, Jenkins and his family moved to Dubuque when he was in second grade. He received music instruction in high school from Amy Dunker who in 2017 was a professor of music at CLARKE UNIVERSITY. He went on to receive his master's degree in music composition from Rice University.

In 2017 Jenkins was selected as the winner of the 2016 Composition-Band/Wind Ensemble (Student Division) Category of The American Prize. The American Prize celebrates excellence in the arts. His composition "We Seven" related to his interest in space and the exploits of the Mercury Seven astronauts.
