JEAN MARIE CARDINAL COMMEMORATIVE CANOE VOYAGE. Re-enactment of the legendary voyage of Jean Marie CARDINAL, a French LEAD miner and fur trader. The commemorative voyage, scheduled to last fifteen days, left Dubuque on July 24, 1976. The canoeists' schedule called for stops in twenty-five cities during the trip. Rex Wellman of Dubuque portrayed Cardinal. Using twenty-six-foot canoes, the canoeists paddled at fifty-five strokes per minute to maintain a speed of approximately nine miles per hour.
