HUMKE BAKERY. In 1909 Wither's Bakery was purchased and operated under the name of Graessle & Humke at 13th and Main for one year. In 1910 the bakery moved to 1538 Central Avenue and operated as F.O. Humke Sanitary Bakery. The business moved directly across the street in 1919--1515 to 1527 Central.

In 1926 the company incorporated under the name of Humke's Sanitary Bakery. Officers in 1934 included F.O. Humke, president; A.E.Humke, vice-president; and J.M. Weidich, secretary and treasurer. (1) Bread could be purchased from home by waiting for the sound announcing the bread trucks driving through the neighborhoods. (2)

The 1929 through 1951 Dubuque City Directory listed 1527 Central. Humke Bakery was offered for sale in 1954
