HOPPE, Fred. (Burscheidt, Germany, Mar. 3, 1836--Spokane Falls, WA, December, 1892). Director, Iowa Conservatory of Music. Following the [[CIVIL WAR]], Hoppe taught music in Dubuque and founded the Iowa Conservatory of Music. He was lected the leader of the [[GERMANIA BAND]]. Requests for the band to perform could be made at his home on Clay Street or at the [[DUBUQUE CABINET MAKERS' ASSOCIATION]]. (1)

Hoppe held the position of organist at [[ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH]] for three years. In 1871 he was one of the sponsors of the St. Mary's Cash Gift Concert. For the event, 3,000 tickets were sold for two dollars each. In addition to the concert, a drawing was held for cash prizes totaling $3,000. The remaining $3,000 went to the church. (2) At the beginning in 1876, he served in the same capacity at [[SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH]].  In the same year, he was the founder of the [[CENTENNIAL SILVER CORNET BAND]].
 
In 1885, Hoppe was living in Minneapolis, Minnesota.


Hoppe held the position of organist at [[ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH]] for three years and beginning in 1876 served in the same capacity at [[SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH]]. He was married in 1857 to Laura Hager of St. Louis; they had six children.
