Hoppe held the position of organist at [[ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH]] for three years. In 1871 he was one of the sponsors of the St. Mary's Cash Gift Concert. For the event, 3,000 tickets were sold for two dollars each. In addition to the concert, a drawing was held for cash prizes totaling $3,000. The remaining $3,000 went to the church.
