HESSEL, William J. (Dubuque, IA, June 28, 1912--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 26, 1995). Hessel promoted bowling in the mid-1930s through the 1950s. He served a number of leagues as president, vice-president, or secretary-treasurer. He was also involved in many projects.

In 1946 he was elected as officer of the Dubuque Bowling Association and was elected president for the 1951-1952 season.In 1955 he was elected a director of the Iowa State Bowling Association and served as president in the 1962-1963 season.

Hessel was a charter member of the Dubuque Chapter #5 of the "700" Bowling Clubs of America and served that chapter as an officer. He had four sanctioned 700 series and the highest average of 198 during the 1949-1950 season.

Among the championships he achieved were: 1952 Dubuque All-Events Champion, 1957-58 Dubuque Doubles Champion, 1960 Singles Champion, high three game series and high game in the Iowa State 700 Club Tournament, 1962 member of the Iowa State 700 Club Championship Team, and the 1972 singles champion in the Iowa State 700 Club Tournament. He bowled in more than 30 Iowa State Tournaments and 20 ABC Tournaments.

He was inducted into the Dubuque Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1966 and the Iowa Bowling Hall of Fame in March, 1975.
