HAWKEYE HOMESTEAD ASSOCIATION. This organization was established in Dubuque on July 7, 1873 to provide assistance and protection to soldiers who wished to participate in the Homestead Act. Members were to have served in the United States Army or Navy.

The association's purpose was to select and locate homesteads on the public lands of the United States in any state or territory and to aid settlers to obtain locations of land by homestead, preemption, or purchase; also to purchase and sell real estate; and to hold and property connected with the business and for the promotion of the interests of the association.

The executive committee of the association included Virgil J. WILLIAMS, M. M. Trumbull, George M. Staples, William VANDEVER, and Mortimer M. HAYDEN.
