Hardie, the recipient of the 1988 [[FIRST CITIZEN AWARD]] of the [[TELEGRAPH HERALD]], compiled a distinguished list of service to the Dubuque community. He served as the first president of the Arboretum Association which he was instrumental in founding and held charter-member status in the [[CLARKE COLLEGE]] Development Council. Often his service spanned decades. Examples included four decades of leadership in the United Way, four decades with the Rotary Club, three decades with the [[DUBUQUE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE]], and two decades with [[LORAS COLLEGE]] and [[CLARKE COLLEGE]] projects. (1) Hardie served on the boards of Albrecht Acres and the [[DUBUQUE ARTS COUNCIL]], director of the Five Flags Executive Committee and the Five Flags Executive Fund Committee, director of the [[DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY]], and was a project business consultant for [[JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TRI-STATES INC.]] Hardie served as president of  St. Columbkille Parish Council and the [[DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT]] Board of Education.
