HAMMEL, William. (Dubuque, IA-- ). Hammel, a successful candidate for the Dubuque City Council in 1979, was a strong advocate for a proposed industrial park along Radford Road. (1) He represented the 1st Ward in Dubuque from 1982 to 1985 and was instrumental in founding the GREATER DUBUQUE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION and served on its original Board of Directors. He was president of Dubuque Local 353 of the Professional Firefighters Association from 1969-1970, chairman of the Dubuque Housing Code Rehabilitation Commission, and member of the Dubuque Housing Code Review Committee and the Dubuque Housing Advisory and Appeals Board. He was a co-founder of Dubuque Families in Action. In 2009 he campaigned unsuccessfully for a position on the Dubuque City Council.

Hammel was a firefighter on the Dubuque Fire Department beginning in 1968. (2) This background led to his research and writing the history of the department which appears as the website: dfdhistory.com. Hammel had forty-four years in the construction industry and in 2007 retired from Clark Construction Group where he had served as Senior Project Manager MEP.
