GLAB, Adam. (Grand Duchy of Hess--Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 17, 1828--Dubuque, IA, Nov. 26, 1880). Whether or not Glab "started out in life for himself without a dollar" as claimed in his biography printed in The History of Dubuque County, Iowa, Glab married Miss Kathrina Wemer, from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and came to Dubuque in 1852. He began mining and operated a hotel called the Bull's Head near the future site of the fairgrounds in West Dubuque. (1). Adam's brother was John GLAB. (2)

Glab experienced enough success that he used $50,000 in 1866 to establish a brickyard and the NORTHERN BREWING COMPANY that he operated with his sons Nicholas, Alois, and Frank. Renamed the GLAB BREWERY in 1885 after Nicholas GLAB took it over, the business was located on the later site of HOLY GHOST CATHOLIC CHURCH and school. An ice house was later added together with summer houses, bowling alleys, and beer gardens. The brewery employing nine men at an annual cost of $900 weekly annually produced five thousand barrels of beer for an annual income of $40,000. (3) Beer produced by the company was stored in caves along Central Avenue between 30th and 31st STREETS.

In 1892 the Glab Brewery along with several other BREWERIES were merged as the DUBUQUE BREWING AND MALTING COMPANY. Nicholas Glab was the company president and general manager.
