GLAB, Adam. (Grand Duchy of Hess--Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 17, 1828-Dubuque, IA, Nov. 26, 1880). In 1851, Glab married Miss Kathrina Wemer, from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Glab came to Dubuque in 1852 and began mining and operated a hotel called the Bull's Head near the future site of the fairgrounds in West Dubuque. (1).

Glab experienced enough success that he used $50,000 in 1866 to establish a brickyard and the NORTHERN BREWING COMPANY that he operated with his sons Nicholas, Alois, and Frank. Adam's brother was John GLAB. (2)

In 1892 the GLAB BREWERY along with several other BREWERIES were merged as the DUBUQUE BREWING AND MALTING COMPANY. Nicholas GLAB was the company president and general manager.
