FAIRBANKS, Josiah. (Harvard, MA, July 17, 1818--Dubuque, IA, Feb. 21, 1910). Fairbanks came to Dubuque in 1856. One of his first shipping contracts called for transporting material from Illinois for the DUBUQUE AND SIOUX CITY RAILROAD.
Several years later, Fairbanks entered the baking business. His company, J. E. FAIRBANKS AND COMPANY, this area's first steam cracker bakery, used the first rotary ovens west of the MISSISSIPPI RIVER. Fairbanks was succeeded in this business by Edwin W. ALBEE.
