ENZLER, Clarence J.
In 1939, Dr. Enzler took a leave of absence from St. Francis College, Loretto, Pennsylvania where he was the head of the department of social sciences. He returned to Dubuque to operate the JOSEPH A. ENZLER'S TRUNK AND LEATHER GOODS STORE. (2) By 1953 Enzler's was listed as being operated by C. J. Enzler and C. P. Hoare.
Dr. Enzler worked part-time as an information specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture from 1937–1972, except from 1943–1945 when he served as the feature editor with the National Catholic Welfare Conference News Service (later known as the Catholic News Service).
Dr. Enzler was a frequent contributor of articles on economic questions to various magazines and wrote a weekly syndicated column to twenty newspapers. Dr. Enzler was the author of several books including My Other Self and Some Social Aspects of the Depression. He is perhaps best known for his Lenten devotional booklet Everyone’s Way of the Cross, first published in 1970. A member of the Toastmaster Club, Dr. Enzler in 1959 was a contestant in the international speech contest conducted by Toastmaster International in San Francisco. (3)
Dr. Enzler and his wife Kathleen Crowley Enzler were co-chairpersons of the Archdiocese of Washington Family Life Conference. He was a speaker at Family Life conventions in Boston, Buffalo, and San Antonio. In 1960 they received a plaque from the Family Life Conference as Washington Couple of the Year. (4)
They were the parents of thirteen children one of whom was Jerry ENZLER.
