ELLSWORTH, Barbara Lange. (Dubuque, IA, May 17, 1920--Nov. 7, 2008). The wife of Theodore Richards ELLSWORTH, Barbara Lange served on the board and as president of the DUBUQUE REGIONAL HUMANE SOCIETY. She was a member of the board of LINWOOD CEMETERY from 1987 to 2003 and president for two of those years. She was active in the Girl Scouts, AMERICAN RED CROSS DUBUQUE COUNTY CHAPTER, DUBUQUE VISITING NURSE ASSOCIATION and MOUNT PLEASANT HOME. She also served on the board of FINLEY HOSPITAL (THE).

In the 1960s and 1970s, Ellsworth served as the vice chair of the Dubuque County Republican Party. Her interest in politics came through her family's long involvement in elections. Her grandfather, Otto F. LANGE served in the Iowa State Senate from 1926 to 1930. He ran for governor in 1930 and 1932. Her father, Harvey M. LANGE was the Republican Party Chairman of the Second District of Iowa.

Ellsworth managed a new initiative called "Turnout by Telephone," a voters' drive to rally constituents to the polls. In 1964 she represented Iowa voters at the 28th Republican National Convention as a Barry Goldwater delegate. When her husband chose to run for the United States Congress in 1972, she campaigned with him and after the campaign resigned her position as vice chair. After the death of her husband in 1986, she operated Lange Insurance for three years before selling the company.
