EISBACH, Leo J. (Dubuque, IA, Aug. 17, 1900--Dubuque, IA, July 14, 1956). County sheriff. Nationally known as the largest sheriff in the United States, Eisbach stood 6 feet 5.5 inches tall and weighed 346 pounds. Between 1927 and 1931, Eisbach had been president of Dubuque Local 17 of the Bricklayers and Masons and Plasterers International Union. Beginning in 1933, he served as chief deputy in the Dubuque County sheriff's office and became the sheriff in 1939.
