EDUCATION'S UNSUNG HEROES. Sponsored by the Minneapolis-based ReliaStar Financial Corp. and Northern Life, a subsidiary that provides retirement plans for teachers, the program recognized "innovative spirit that is making a difference in classrooms across the country." The honor was annually presented to one hundred teachers nationwide. (1)

In 1996 Deb Fordice, a teacher at AUDUBON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL won the award which was used for new computers and technology in the classroom. In 1997 Carol Duehr, a teacher at FULTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL won the honor. In 1998 the award was presented to Deb Stevens, a music teacher in the DUBUQUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT for teaching jazz an jazz improvisation to elementary students. (2) In the same year, Stevens was named "Teacher of the Year" by the school district. (3)
