The site of the store had once been planned as a site for a multi-million dollar shopping mall. Plans collapsed when no major retailers could be persuaded to locate to Kennedy Circle.
Econofoods faced stiff competition after 2003 with the growth of Hy-Vee and the development of the Walmart grocery operation. While food store sales grew 1.6% from 2005 to 2008, the market dropped significantly from 2007-2008. Eagles closed their store across Kennedy Road from Econofoods in 2005. The impact of Hy-Vee increased with the construction of their new store between Dubuque and Asbury. On December 1, 2009, Econofoods announced that it too would close.
