DUBUQUE RIDE FOR THE KIDS. In 2010 the second annual "Ride" was again hosted by the McClain and Reiss families. Both families experienced the outstanding service and talents provided by the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.
Sarah J. REISS, daughter of Mark and Julie (McClain) Reiss from Dubuque, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in May of 2008. She underwent many treatments and surgeries in the Pediatric Cancer Unit at the Children’s Hospital. Matthew Wessels, 18 month-old son of Brian and Amanda (McClain) Wessels, was born with a heart condition that has required 2 surgeries so far.
Because of the outstanding care and compassion that families received through the University of Iowa, they organizing this event to raise funds for the Brain Tumor and Heart Research programs at the Children’s Hospitals. In 2009 the organization raised over $30,000. The 94-mile motorcycle ride/drive, in October of that year, started in Dubuque and made stops in Farley, Cascade, Bellevue, and St. Donatus. The ride finished at Happy’s Place in Dubuque with a dinner, live auction and band. Four participants also raised money and shaved their heads in honor of the cause. In 2010 the event raised more than $59,300. That ride involved drivers and fans of more than 117 motorcycles and 20 classic cars. One bus made the 104-mile poker run, which started in Dubuque and made stops in Sherrill, Cascade, Bernard, Zwingle and Dubuque.
