DUBUQUE MAENNERCHOR. In the 1850s the German settlers of Dubuque formed such musical groups as the "Dubuque Gesang Verein. These were short-lived. In 1868 the first organization of important was the Dubuque Maennerchor under the director of Mr. F. Hoppe. The group distinguished itself at the sixth saengerfest in 1873.

The Dubuque Maennerchor later merged with the Helvetia Maennerchor. The renamed "Deutscher Saengerbund" was again short-lived.

It was not until 1883 that the DUBUQUE SAENGERBUND, which became the oldest musical organization in Dubuque, was organized.
