DUBUQUE LEADER (The). The "Official Newspaper of Dubuque Organized Labor." Founded in 1906, the Dubuque Leader was a newspaper publisher and commercial printer. The paper witnessed the rise of the union movement. It was an early advocate of equal pay for equal work, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's effort to lead the way out of the GREAT DEPRESSION, and union representation on the City Council.

Bill Winders purchased The Dubuque Leader in 1980, ensuring that labor leaders and Democrats haD a voice. He provided for photo and column space for the writings of Sen. Tom Harkin, Attorney General Tom Miller, Sen. Pam JOCHUM, Rep. Patrick J. MURPHY, and many other labor and Democratic leaders. Winders maintained The Leader as a union print shop. Bill provided extensive coverage of the nurses at Finley Hospital and their affiliation with SEIU.

In 1967 the Dubuque Leader was published every Friday by the Iowa Co-op Publishing Company at 1154 Iowa Street. Subscription rates payable in advance included three months for $.90, six months for $1.75 and one year for $3.00. The board of directors included John Sherman, president; Ed Grode, vice president; Gordon E. Duenow, secretary-treasurer; John Grogan, Joseph Blaser, Harold Milligan, Fred Berberich, Leo Bonz, and Larry Grutz.

The 1937 Dubuque Consurvey Directory and 1939 Dubuque City Directory listed 239 W. 6th.

The 1942 Dubuque Classified Business Directory through 1977 Dubuque City Directory located the company at 1154 Iowa Street.

The 1983 through 1993 Dubuque City Directory listed 1527 Central.
