DEROUIN, Herman "Babe"
DEROUIN, Herman "Babe." (Eau Claire, WI- ). As a skilled guard on the basketball courts, Derouin led the Duhawks to a 51-26 record during his years at LORAS COLLEGE including trips to the National Intercollegiate Tournament in 1939 and 1940. In 1989 he was inducted into the Loras College Athletic Hall of Fame. (1)
Derouin capped a forty-eight year career in coaching and educational administration as the first athletic director at STEPHEN HEMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL. He taught and coached in a number of high schools in Wisconsin and Iowa.
Derouin came to Hempstead while the building was still under construction and students had to go to school half days at DUBUQUE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. Hempstead's first athletes to attain prominence while Derouin was athletic director were earned by the baseball team coached by Richard CORE, with the football team soon to follow.
