COACHWHIP BAND. Led by King Hatcher, the Coachwhip Band in 1874 was reorganized with five musicians who specialized in dance music. (1) In June, 1875 the Dubuque Herald editorial staff wrote that since the band had added a piccolo player the group was able to "make better music." (2)

The popularity of the group soared and in January 1876 it was announced that the musicians would attent the Philadelphia Centennial as a representative of Iowa. (3)
